Nottingham Contemporary

Project Overview

Nottingham Contemporary is a multi-disciplinary arts space and regional gallery housed in a landmark building with an approach to construction and operation that is environmentally sustainable. It provides major gallery spaces together with education rooms and workshop spaces, multi-media resource area, cafe and bar.

The gallery sits on a tightly enclosed site and against a steep cliff edge, with its form connecting the higher and lower levels of the city. The exterior of scalloped green precast concrete takes its inspiration from the 19th century buildings of Nottingham and in particular the façades of the Lace Market.

Jackson Coles replaced the original project managers and took the main works to successful completion.
The building was delivered by Nottingham City Council with partnership support from Arts Council England, East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) and European sources.

Nottingham Contemporary received a RIBA Award.
