Mamma Mia! – The Party

The Brief

We have been successfully working with AEG and Crosstree since 2017 on their destination retail and entertainment district, ICON Outlet at the 02. The vision for this development was that it both supports the main O2 events arena and also acts as a customer draw in its own right. This vision has been achieved via the careful curation of the retail, entertainment and F&B occupier blend.

Mamma Mia – The Party saw the conversion of a former nightclub into an immersive entertainment and dining experience created by ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus. We were engaged on both the shell and core works and the full fit out of the Mediterranean themed restaurant, designed to look like a Greek taverna, live music stage area and dance floor. The design, based on the successful original venue in Stockholm, uses multiple terraced seating levels to create good sightlines to the stage as well as adding to the taverna atmosphere.

The Challenge

As with all works undertaken within the O2 ICON Outlet, the programme was carefully worked around the music concerts and sporting events held at the O2 in order to minimise disturbance.

This success of this project was heavily reliant on the provision of high quality F&B for package guests and we worked closely with the chosen catering provider to ensure the design and installation of the kitchen allowed the service team to operate at full capacity each evening.

The Outcome

The project was completed to a very tight programme and within a tight budget and successfully opened in October 2021. The interior was completed and dressed by the client’s production design team as an integral part of the space, using recycled materials where possible. The design team also retained elements of the existing nightclub to reduce material use and embodied carbon. The voids below the terraces form large plenums, supplying air via attenuated vents in the venues scenery to reduce acoustic interference during performances.

A highlight for our team was being invited to one of the opening nights and sitting close to ABBA’s Benny and Björn.
