Big Penny Social

The Brief

We recently completed a new multistorey social, events and performance space for Big Penny Social, which sits alongside the operator’s existing beer hall – the UK’s largest – and entertainment hub in East London. The new venue is located within the operator’s third warehouse on Priestley Way, part of a series of large conjoined, industrial structures dating from the 1950s, once home to London’s Irn-Bru factory.

The brief for the new space was to provide a series of ‘competitive socialising’ spaces including pool, darts, shuffleboard and karaoke facilities. This meant that careful integration of specialist installations within the construction works was required, including co-ordination of design requirements and programming of the works.

The Challenge

The Client had ambitious targets for the opening date of the new space. We therefore had to work with the team to develop a project plan and procurement strategy that provided the optimum programme whilst also delivering the quality of finish required. The solution was to procure the works in phases, with separate enabling and structural works contracts to allow works to progress on site whilst interior design details were finalised.

The Outcome

Now open to great acclaim, Big Penny Social successfully stitches new floors into the existing corridors and staircases to make sense of a tangle of different circulation routes, an especially important aspect when considering the retrofit of a former factory building for use as a high-capacity public space and venue.

Inserting a new mezzanine structure into the existing industrial volume, as well as making alterations to the historic fabric of the building for its new use, has enabled the operator to successfully host over 600 people.
