We were engaged as part of a team led by Karakusevic Carson Architects to look at various options for the large-scale replacement of homes on the Broadwater Farm Estate for the London Borough of Haringey.
The masterplan focused on reviewing the Tangmere and Northolt housing blocks in line with the council’s Urban Design Framework (UDF). The buildings were scheduled for demolition due to serious safety issues identified following the Grenfell fire disaster. The redevelopment masterplan designs focused on altering the vehicle heavy public realm, creating a collection of new buildings set around landscaped courtyards, civic spaces and connected by pedestrian links to unite the neighbourhood.
The UDF included a detailed analysis of the technical constraints and design challenges, along with an estate wide characterisation study. In response to the carbon conscious estate renewal strategy, which focused on reducing energy costs for tenants, we were also involved in reviewing options for the relocation and improvement of the CHP energy centre to provide district energy.
Broadwater Farm Estate was crowned winner of the 2023 New London Architecture Awards in the Masterplans & Area Strategies Category.
