Hannington Farm

The Brief

This project created a new 3 storey 13,000 ft² family home set within 300 acres of farmland on the edge of Hannington village Northamptonshire. In addition to the family house a single storey Farm Manager’s House, stables and barn were built together with extensive new gardens, a new lake and associated hard and soft landscaping across the estate.

The house is predominantly constructed in CLT with structural oak frames introducing a mixture of single and double height reception rooms. The main house features exceptionally high quality finishes throughout, with the external walls clad in Cotswold stone and topped by a natural stone shingle roof. The interior layout houses a swimming pool, sauna, gymnasium, games room, family rooms, kitchen, bed and bathrooms, set out in a series of wings.

The Challenge

Our Clients acquired this former farmstead and the derelict farm buildings that surrounded it, with the intention of creating a modern, high quality family home and restoring the landscape they sit within all with an emphasis on sustainability and respect for the natural environment. We worked closely with the client and design team from inception to completion, providing key advice and support as the design of the structure, servicing, finishes and on the selection of materials to make sure the Client’s exacting design and quality aspirations were achieved whilst keeping costs within the budget set.

The Outcome

As well as meeting the Client’s sustainability brief, the benefits of selecting the CLT frame in terms of speed of construction were really apparent once the project went onsite.

The completed project has created a warm and welcoming family home with striking design features including 3 freestanding tall stone chimneys, asymmetrical pitched roofs and an impressive double-height entrance hall.

Hannington Farm won the 2019 RIBA Regional East Midlands Award.
