The Hop Exchange

The Hop Exchange is a 96,000 ft² Grade II listed building, completed in 1867. The Client proudly calls the Hop Exchange ‘the jewel in their portfolio’ and their brief is to protect all the extant architectural heritage, while future-proofing the building in terms of sustainability, energy efficiency and new tenant facilities.

The formation of new, large restaurant spaces at ground and basement levels will draw in visitors from the adjacent Borough Market. A secondary level entrance from Borough Market/Park Street is to be implemented, providing both independent access for the new restaurant areas and DDA-compliant access to the main building.

The atrium roof light will be replaced, with the current 1980s rooflights being swapped out for a more elegant solution, more akin to the original Victorian roof. The works are being completed in phases with very significant façade remediation currently ongoing, comprising stone, stucco and timber remediation along with the removal of the original Victorian ‘hoop iron’ which has caused major damage over many years as it has corroded.

Completion is anticipated in late Autumn 2026.
