Merchant’s Hall

Project Overview

This innovative project comprised the partial demolition and rebuild of a former 1850s postal office to create 20,000 ft² of CAT A office space, a 1,100 ft² small business suite and two residential units totalling 2,300 ft².

The Client’s brief focused on minimising the carbon footprint, and we worked closely with the team to help ensure the existing structure could be utilised wherever possible. The design utilises a hybrid steel and CLT construction, which gives a clean and modern feel to the commercial workspaces within the building.

The pre-fabricated and pre-finished lightweight CLT structure was inserted into retained façades. This innovative construction technique contributed to both a very fast build and to the building’s BREEAM Excellent rating.

Merchants Hall was shortlisted for an AJ Retrofit ‘Refurbishment of the Year’ award.
