Bedford School

Project Overview

We have recently begun working with RIBA Stirling prize winning architect Niall McLaughlin on a new-build academic centre of excellence for Bedford School. Arranged across two-storey’s, the state-of-the-art building will host 21 classrooms for Maths, Economics and Computer Science along with smaller rooms and spaces for group working and seminars.

This development is the largest evolution of Bedford School’s estate since it moved to it’s current site at Burnaby Road in 1891. The design brief focused on creating a flagship educational faciility so that Bedford School can maintain it’s reputation as a ‘destination school’ for day and boarding pupils for generations to come.

The building is composed as a chain of simple square arranged around a central breakout and circulation concourse. The façades mirror the neo-gothic elements of the main school building, employing deep reveals, gabled roofs and chimneys. To the front a new pedestrainised square is being created and to the rear a new large courtyard garden will connect the new building with the existing school library. The teaching block will be constructed using environmentally advanced technologies, materials and glazing.
